It’s World Hypnobirthing Day! As a hypnobirthing mum myself, a hypnobirthing practitioner and a birth doula, I believe it is fantastic preparation for birth and also for parenting…. This blog explores some of the benefits of this approach.
Hypnobirthing is a childbirth method that aims to create a positive and empowering birth experience for both the mother, partner and baby. It involves the use of relaxation techniques, visualisation, and positive affirmations to reduce fear, tension, and pain during labor and birth. A common misconception is that the mum will be in a hypnotic trance during the labour but this is really not the case, it;’s more about conditioning the body to relax and so allowing things to progress more efficiently and with more comfort. I like to say that it is more about achieving a state of ‘relaxed focus’ and the benefits that flow from this.
The concept of hypnobirthing has been around for decades, but it has gained popularity in recent years as more and more women seek natural and positive birth experiences. The techniques are often taught alongside regular antenatal education (stages of labour, hospital interventions, what happens after you give birth etc) to provide a well rounded course and preparation for meeting your baby. Benefits of the approach are outlined below:
Reduced Fear and Anxiety
One of the main benefits of hypnobirthing is that it helps to reduce fear and anxiety during childbirth. Fear and tension can cause the body to produce stress hormones, which can lead to prolonged labor and increased pain. Hypnobirthing techniques help the mother to remain calm and relaxed, which can reduce the production of stress hormones and promote the production of endorphins, the body's natural pain relievers.
Improved Birth Outcomes
Hypnobirthing has been shown to improve birth outcomes. Studies have found that women who use hypnobirthing techniques during labour have a shorter labour, require less pain medication, and have a lower rate of interventions. This is because hypnobirthing promotes the body's natural ability to give birth and reduces the need for these medical interventions.
Better Bonding with Baby
Hypnobirthing can also help to promote bonding between the mother and baby. This happens in 2 ways; the approach relies on conditioning the body during pregnancy with mindfulness techniques, this leads to more connection while pregnant. Additionally, by reducing fear and anxiety, the mother can remain calm and present during the birth, which can help to create a positive and peaceful environment for the baby. This can lead to a stronger bond between the mother and baby, which is important for the baby's emotional and social development.
Increased Confidence and Empowerment
Another benefit of hypnobirthing is that it can increase the mother's confidence and sense of empowerment during childbirth. By using relaxation techniques and positive affirmations, the mother can feel more in control of her body and the birth. This can lead to a more positive and empowering birth experience, which can have long-lasting effects on the mother's self-esteem and confidence as a parent.
Skills for Life
I am often told by parents that I work with that they continue to use the breathing and grounding techniques that they learned on the course as they move into parenthood. Helping them feel calmer and more positive as they navigate their new lives and get to know their baby.
In conclusion, hypnobirthing is a childbirth method that can help to create a positive and empowering birth experience. By reducing fear and anxiety, improving birth outcomes, promoting bonding with the baby, and increasing confidence and empowerment, hypnobirthing can be a valuable tool for any woman or couple preparing for childbirth and parenting.
